GMHC, DoorDash Partner to Deliver Groceries to New Yorkers Living with HIV/AIDS

GMHC and DoorDash today launched a new partnership to provide food and employment assistance to people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City.

Through Project DASH, DoorDash’s program to empower community organizations to leverage DoorDash logistics to support their communities, DoorDash Dashers will deliver free bags of groceries to GMHC clients in their homes throughout 2021. DoorDash will also provide clients with job-readiness training and access to low-barrier-to-entry earning opportunities like Dashing on the DoorDash platform.

“We are thrilled to partner with DoorDash on this initiative to meet the needs of our clients during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said GMHC CEO Kelsey Louie. “Both food security and employment are critical to ensuring the health and well-being of our clients. DoorDash’s support will help sustain our services to address these vital needs.”

Since March 2020, GMHC has been delivering services remotely to its 10,000 clients including HIV and STI testing and counseling, legal services, supportive housing, mental health and substance use counseling, and more. The agency also launched a food delivery program called GMHC On the Go to provide nutritious, shelf-stable meals to clients in their homes. This program included the delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables through the State of New York’s Nourish New York initiative.

“GMHC is a storied organization that for nearly four decades has been on the front lines of the fight against the vicious epidemic of HIV/AIDS. When the rest of society stigmatized and discriminated against those suffering from that epidemic, GMHC carried their voices forward time and time again,” said John Horton, Head of Public Engagement, DoorDash. “This COVID-19 pandemic has robbed so many people of economic opportunity. Ensuring that GMHC’s clients have access to food and work is absolutely essential to helping our communities make it through this crisis.”
