August 11, 1981. That was the day when Dr. Larry Mass and his friend Larry Kramer, the late writer and activist, summoned everyone they knew for an emergency meeting about the mysterious and frightening new diseases killing gay men.
In a milestone development, GMHC has won a transformative federal grant to provide comprehensive harm-reduction care at no cost to anyone wanting help with substance use.
As Pride Month came to a close, providers from the SURE Housing Initiative (Supporting Replication of Housing Interventions) visited GMHC for a comprehensive site visit on June 27th and 28th. The purpose of the visit was to discuss the implementation and evaluation processes of the program, ensuring that all aspects align with the goals of the initiative.
On July 17, GMHC joined forces with Lincoln Center to host “Keep on Dancin’: A Dance Party Celebrating the Spirit of the Paradise Garage.” From 1977 to 1987, Paradise Garage reigned supreme over New York’s downtown scene and is still celebrated as one of the world’s most iconic clubs. GMHC collaborated with Paradise Garage in the 1980s to bring HIV and AIDS resources to the nightlife community.
In a groundbreaking victory, GMHC’s Public Policy Department enlisted our communities to pass statewide legislation that prevents all insurers from discriminating against people taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent HIV.

For the 35th anniversary of GMHC’s Latex Ball, its impresario and guiding spirit, Luna Luis Ortiz, chose “Ballroom Tapestries” as the theme to celebrate the Ballroom community and its rich history.
