Preeminent HIV & AIDS Services Agency GMHC Launches National Search for a Permanent CEO

GMHC, the world’s first HIV and AIDS services organization, has launched the search for a permanent CEO to lead the organization into the future, in partnership with the Kevin Chase Executive Search Group. This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic and visionary leader to build on GMHC’s rich legacy and chart a bold new course, as the recruitment profile for the position outlines.

The CEO search marks an exciting new phase for GMHC, which has been providing vital services and advocacy for people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS since it was founded in 1982 as Gay Men’s Health Crisis. GMHC has a long and storied history, from its early days as a grassroots organization fighting for the rights and dignity of people with AIDS, to its current role as a leader in the fight against HIV and related health disparities. Over the years, GMHC has adapted and evolved to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV and AIDS, while staying true to its core values of compassion, justice, and inclusion.

The ideal candidate for GMHC’s permanent CEO will be an innovative and collaborative leader with a passion for social justice and a deep understanding of the complex challenges facing people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS today. They will have a proven track record of success in nonprofit leadership, with the ability to build and manage a high-performing team, cultivate strong partnerships with key stakeholders, publicly represent the agency as a thought leader, effectively and creatively fundraise, and drive transformative change.

There has been much progress in the fight against HIV, but GMHC is launching the search for a permanent CEO at a time when there is still no cure, and there are significant prevention and treatment challenges, particularly among communities of color and other marginalized groups. The COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the MPOX outbreak in 2022, have underscored the need for nimble, innovative approaches at the intersection of public health and social justice. The ideal CEO candidate will be someone who can navigate these challenges, while advancing GMHC’s mission to fight to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. This is an inspiring and hopeful moment for GMHC and the communities we serve. With the right leader at the helm, GMHC will be an even brighter beacon of hope, healing, and progress.
