Honoring Alan Menken with the Howard Ashman Award made the 2024 GMHC Cabaret one for the books.
The performances! The stories! The unbridled joy that washed over the audience as they recognized each Ashman/Menken song sung by Broadway’s best.
There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as Alan Menken shared stories and songs honoring his dear collaborator Howard Ashman. Alan’s collaborator and Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz presented Menken with the award. The night rounded out with Alan gifting the audience a once-in-a-lifetime experience of hearing Ashman lyrics for the very first time, pulling out a song from an unfinished and unpublished Ashman/Menken musical. It was more magical than words can describe.
