Founded as Gay Men’s Health Crisis in 1982, GMHC was born when our government and civil society turned their backs on people living with HIV and AIDS. Throughout 42 years, we have not shied away from the culture wars and other epidemics that have affected the communities we serve. GMHC has the unique history, resiliency, courage, and knowledge to move forward.
Decades ago, we faced AIDS denialism, a dangerously tragic concept. Denying the reality of the HIV and AIDS epidemic has negatively impacted the lives of thousands of people in the United States and has prevented access to HIV-related medications and care services. We must support science over stigma. Repeating the sad history of denying that HIV causes AIDS will only lead to increased infections and unnecessary deaths.
GMHC will be here to serve.
We will continue to provide housing, food, legal and immigration support, mental health and substance use services, HIV/STI testing—and more—in a safe and non-judgmental space for thousands of people living with affected by HIV and AIDS.
