Assistant Director, Mental Health

Gay Men’s Health Crisis [GMHC] is the world’s first and leading provider of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy. The Assistant Director is responsible for the ongoing development and oversight of all programs, deliverables, OTPS budget management, client services, staffing, training and supervision within Mental Health Services. The AD provides client-level care through intakes and assessments, and individual, couples, family and group counseling and psychotherapy; and ensures the competent delivery of evidenced-based and home-grown interventions. This individual participates in client recruitment and engagement efforts and oversees the Rapid Response System, providing crisis intervention and clinical triage for GMHC clients. This person is the lead member of a multi-disciplinary treatment team that works to improve overall client functioning by designing and implementing individualized treatment plans, addressing the continuum of mental health and medical care needs of clients.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Assistant Director, Mental Health include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and achieve contractual obligations and deliverables by ensuring staff are adequately informed and are compliant with such obligations (e.g., chart. audits, quality assurance, data entry, documentation in charts, training of staff, adhering to scope of services, etc.);
  • Provide adequate, competent, and regular clinical and task supervision of staff, and ensure that supervising staff are doing the same for their supervisees;
  • Ensure that mental health services are based in a sound theoretical framework; ensure substance use services exemplify a harm reduction approach, and oversee evidenced-based and home-grown interventions for clients;
  • Accountable for timely submission of monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reports, and responsible for timely data entry of services by program personnel;
  • Develops and maintains supportive program policies and procedures;
  • Maintains good working relationships with external community providers and articulates them in memoranda of understanding

Education: Advanced graduate degree and New York State license in psychology, social work, mental health counseling, marriage & family therapy or clinical art therapy. Ph.D. or Psy.D. preferred. SIFI is required for social work applicants.

Experience: Proven knowledge and experience working in the mental health counseling, harm reduction and recovery readiness models. Demonstrated clinical supervisory experience, preferable working with professional and paraprofessional staff. Proven clinical skills and experience working with diverse populations of men and women living with and at risk for HIV/AIDS, and with complex care needs, sexual violence, trauma, poverty, substance use histories, etc. Established experience supervising and managing grant driven and performance based mental health programs preferred. Demonstrated client recruitment experience targeting high-risk populations, particularly in communities of color. Experience facilitating mental health groups and workshops. Experience in individual mental health and substance use counseling along the continuum of abuse and recovery. Experience in training preparation and providing workshops on topics relevant to the needs of the client population served.

Related Skills/Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS and/or other chronic health conditions, and the social service needs of people living with HIV/AIDS. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely fashion and ability to follow through. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work on a team of paraprofessionals and professionals. Computer skills, including databases and Microsoft Suite needed. Other skills include competence in providing crisis intervention, group design and facilitation, general counseling skills, and developmental psychology.

Coordinator, Special Events and Social Media

The Coordinator, Special Events & Social Media supports the Manager of Events and the larger GMHC Development Team in planning and executing high quality fundraising and cultivation events, and promoting the life-saving work of GMHC through a variety of social media platforms. This position works closely with GMHC’s Communications and Marketing Department to produce event collateral, and to implement high-impact social media campaigns focused on increasing revenue for the organization. This position regularly interacts with vendors and event sponsors, and is a key position within the Development Unit. Specific areas of responsibility include assisting in the preparation of event solicitation materials, letters and proposals, managing multiple spreadsheets and databases, developing a work plan for soliciting luxury brands for silent/live auction items, and identifying and securing businesses to supply liquor, wine and beverages for signature events. Additionally, the Coordinator is responsible for developing a promotional strategy to insure that all social media brand presences are executed through the various social media platforms - Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite and Foursquare, using social media to increase audience following and build effective relationships with event sponsors, bloggers, social media experts and others, and developing creative and interesting content in an effort to enhance event sponsorships, online giving, event branding and marketing.

REPORTS TO: Manager, Special Events

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline is preferred. The ideal candidate will have significant proven experience in fundraising, event production, content development, vendor negotiations, and budget consolidation. Candidate should possess strong communication and leadership skills, and demonstrated ability to conceptualize and lend creative directions on building new projects. The candidate should have some corporate contacts in the luxury market, and should be highly organized, well-spoken, reliable, and professional.

Director, Human Resources, Human Resources

The Director, Human Resources is responsible for the management and oversight of the agency's human resources. This position serves as a member of the agency's management team and is integral to the support and implementation of GMHC's mission. The Director provides senior oversight of all human resources activities including staffing, benefits, employee relations, performance management, staff development, succession planning and human resources information systems. The Director creates and manages budgets for human resources and has input into the overall agency budget with respect to employee compensation and total rewards. The Director develops and maintains diversity initiatives and inclusion programs, oversees staff training and development including employee performance issues and practices, and directs staff recognition and retention programs and policies. The Director maintains internal relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, with direct relationships with the agency's senior management team and management team members. The Director also maintains external relationships with the agency's legal counsel, insurance brokers, vendors and consultants. The Director directly supervises the Assistant Director, Human Resources, and oversees the duties of the Human Resources Specialist to ensure proper day-to-day departmental operations.

REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in human resources management, business management or related field required, with proven, progressive experience managing a multifaceted human resource operation including staffing, benefits, training, and employee relations. Advanced degree preferred. PHR or SPHR certification is a strong plus. Familiarity with HIV/AIDS and lesbian/gay issues a plus. Outstanding presentation, interpersonal, and communication skills a must.

Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Office, Office of the Chief Operating Officer

The Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer provides administrative support to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). This position will oversee the day-to-day functions of the office, including maintaining the Chief Operating Officer’s calendar, answering the telephone, scheduling meetings, organizing the weekly calendar, and maintaining the office files. The Executive Assistant will be responsible for assisting the COO in drafting and editing documents, program narratives, and other reports required by the agency’s various funding sources. Further responsibility will be to work with the COO on special assignments such as assisting with the design and/or formatting of brochures, newsletters and other publications along with working closely with the staff of Program Management and Quality Assurance to ensure proper maintenance of records and files. The Administrative Assistant is a highly visible position having contact daily with many internal management staff from different departments throughout the agency. This individual will also have regular contact with other community-based organizations, health care facilities and legal service providers external from the agency.

REPORTS TO: Chief Operating Officer

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is preferred along with proven experience as personal administrative assistant to an executive. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in conjunction with excellent writing, computer, and organizational skills are essential for this position. This individual should have the ability to function in a fast-paced environment and to triage effectively. HIV Nutrition Specialist

The HIV Nutrition Counselor is responsible for screening and assessing clients for nutritional risk factors and food insecurity. They will also provide nutrition screens, assessments, reassessments, health care updates and counseling for clients. The Specialist provides nutrition counseling for those clients who require more in depth nutrition intervention, and, in addition, provides food pantry services for those clients that are identified as food insecure. This position will create, conduct and develop educational/advertising materials for group nutrition classes. The HIV Nutrition Specialist carries out a variety of activities that relate directly to an assigned program or project. This person participates in setting his/her own objectives and priorities, and follows through in accordance with established procedures as well as recommends changes to improve work systems or procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities of the HIV Nutrition Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide nutrition screens, assessments, reassessments, health care updates and counseling for clients.
  • Create and conduct nutrition group education classes for clients.
  • Develop educational materials and advertising for group nutrition classes.
  • May develop and provide educational workshops to community based organizations and hospitals on issues related to nutrition and HIV.
  • Provide technical assistance to community based organizations and hospitals on HIV nutrition related issues.
  • Utilize internal and external services via referrals based on determined need(s) of client.
  • Provide mentorship to Dietetic Interns.
  • Distribute pantry bags, order food from vendors, accept food deliveries and follow proper food safety precautions.
  • Embraces the value of volunteerism at GMHC, utilizes harm reduction principles and client centered counseling, and keeps abreast of developments in the HIV epidemic.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree and Registered Dietitian (RD) required.

Experience: Familiarity and experience with public and private contract requirements and performance based contracts. This individual should possess experience performing nutrition counseling with an HIV/AIDS population and knowledge of or interest in complementary therapies. An understanding of Microsoft Office Suite necessary.

Related Skills/Knowledge:  Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. This position requires interaction with other departments within GMHC and external agencies. Bi-lingual Spanish is preferred.

Development Officer, Corporate and Foundation Relations

The Officer of Corporation and Foundation Relations supports GMHC in achieving its mission by supporting all fundraising from foundations, corporations, and other sources of private institutional support. This is a fantastic opportunity for a friendly, professional, and driven individual to support the fundraising of more than $2 million annually.

Duties & Responsibilities of the Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the Development unit in maintaining and strengthening relationships with corporate and foundation funders. This work includes creating funder briefings, writing letters and mailings, and maintaining records about our relationships. The Officer will also serve as the agency’s lead representative for a portfolio of these institutional funders and partners.
  • Administering and expanding GMHC’s employer matching gift and cause-related marketing programs.
  • Cultivating corporate representatives to attract event sponsorships for several high-profile events each year, including AIDS Walk New York, Fashion Forward, and the Savor Dinner.
  • Collaborating with program staff across the agency to craft strategies and proposals for specific funding needs in areas such as: the meals and nutrition program for people living with HIV, HIV testing and counseling, legal services, youth programs, social marketing, and research.
  • Prospecting new potential funders to support the agency’s general operations and specific programs and services.                     
  • Writing grant proposals, sponsorship requests, and grant reports for corporate and foundation funders.
  • Supporting the development of large government grant proposals by conducting research and assuming administrative responsibilities to ensure submission of highest-caliber products.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Experience: Experience with grant writing or other related writing projects highly desirable, but interest in fundraising absolutely necessary. In addition, the Officer should possess time management abilities, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work as a team player as well as under pressure. At least 2 years of nonprofit experience, preferably in resource development or communications. Experience working directly with donors and familiarity with best practices of donor engagement/donor services desirable.

Related Skills/Knowledge: Exceptional writing and communications skills necessary.  Strong project management skills and attention to detail required. This person MUST be a self-starter, flexible, and able to manage multiple tasks. Advanced computer/technical skills in Word, Excel, Raiser’s Edge and Outlook required.

Housing Retention Specialist

The Housing Retention Specialist (HRS) supports GMHC in achieving its mission assisting the Health Home Team in matters that relate to an individual’s housing needs. The HRS identifies issues related to current housing status, researches and gathers information, strategically plans to resolve issues, and performs direct contact and negotiation with relevant providers, agencies and organizations to achieve and maintain stable housing. This position will conduct Health and Independent Living Skills Development sessions to improve the individual’s capacity to secure and comply with medical treatment and live independently in permanent housing. 
 
Duties & Responsibilities of the Officer include, but are not limited to:

  • Initiate and complete the process to secure decent, affordable permanent housing.
  • Assist with completing paperwork associated with securing recertification for housing related benefits, income maintenance, and essential housing needs. Insure client obtains and maintains all government benefits and services for which they are eligible.
  • Assist clients to secure services that maximize their tenure in housing; increase their ability to maintain their household and finances, independently perform activities of daily living, uphold the terms of their lease; prevent lease violations; intervene and mitigate crisis situations; maximize tenant safety and security; and prevent avoidable evictions. Conduct apartment inspections.
  • Assist with one time tasks associated with securing or maintaining a residence and household furnishings (ensure moving assistance, identify and complete process for discount travel, telephone or home utilities assistance programs).
  • Keep an up-to-date task checklist and review monthly to insure all instrumental tasks associated with securing and retaining housing are complete and regularly update Housing Needs Assessment.
  • Communicate, engage, advocate on behalf of tenants and mediate conflicts with landlords.
  • Engage and maintain contact with clients in order to recognize circumstances when a client is/may decompensate, relapse or otherwise show signs of behavior that could put their health and/or housing at risk, and connect to Health Home personnel.
  • Invest time needed to engage clients, maintain contact and advise clients when case management provider should be alerted to service needs. Maintain an ongoing awareness of clients’ medical/social conditions (home visits, regular communication, Health Home updates and reassessments).
  • Assess and promote ongoing linkage to medical and community supports. Collaborate with patient navigation program staff to ensure connections are maintained. Document and report on clients’ connection to HIV primary medical care on a quarterly basis.
  • Educate the client about property safety measures and assist/advocate for their installation with landlord (i.e., window guards in homes with children, smoke detectors).
  • Serve as a conduit for wellness presentations to be completed by Health Home or medical provider (i.e., smoking cessation, benefits of exercise, living with diabetes, etc.).
  • Educate about and facilitate appropriate use of services.
  • Refer and follow through with Health Homes to secure longer or intensive case management when indicated.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field

Experience: Proven experience working with individuals with HIV/AIDS or other disabilities or chronic illnesses and healthcare delivery and/or benefits & entitlements.

Related Skills/Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal skills, superior oral and written communication skills and data entry skills are required. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
