   Volunteer Roles

Work directly with GMHC clients

Buddy
Buddies help registered clients with HIV/AIDS to cope with living with the disease. Buddies provide in-home emotional and practical support to registered clients of GMHC, helping with errands, household chores, information gathering and referrals to GMHC and other services. Each Buddy also becomes a member of a team, receiving ongoing supervision and training by staff and team leaders. Some buddies work only by phone, providing emotional support through regular telephone contact. Although we need buddies in all boroughs, our greatest need are in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Spanish as a second language, a plus.

Kitchen Assistant
Kitchen Assistant volunteers assist Meal Program staff in preparing soups, salads, desserts and a choice of entrees daily for GMHC clients. Also assist with serving and clean-up. Weekday daytime availability required.

Pantry Helper
Pantry Assistants help Child Life nutritionist with preparing food bags for distribution to Child Life families. Assist in organizing, stocking and maintaining the food pantry shelves.

Ear-point Acupuncture Specialist

Group Leader
Group leaders are mental health professionals who co-lead support groups for men and women (gay and straight) who are from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Group participants include those in recovery or still using substances, people with HIV/AIDs and their significant others and family members (both HIV-positive and HIV-negative). Opportunities include groups for care partners of people with AIDS, bereavement groups, and recovery groups. An advanced degree in the area of mental health is required.

Licensed Professionals/Workshop Leader
Licensed professionals who are chiropractors, massage therapists, reflexologists, and haircutters are needed to volunteer their talents and services to clients in our Wellness Program. In addition, volunteers with a special talent such as art, music, dance, writing, exercise, etc., and who possess the ability to instruct clients in workshops, are also needed.

Hotline E-Mail Counselor
Hotline E-Mail Counselors represent GMHC by providing information, counseling and referrals regarding HIV/AIDS and related issues. Volunteers will provide written responses to people who e-mail the hotline. Excellent writing skills a must. Ability to work independently and to "hear" the emotional content of written requests for information. Must have e-mail systems knowledge and strict attention to GMHC confidentiality protocols. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues helpful, but not required. Ongoing training and supervision, at the discretion of Internet Supervisor. Work either at home or on-site at GMHC's Hotline.

In this multi-faceted volunteer role, facilitate workshops and/or provide information about HIV and GMHC services (e.g., in classes and clinics, at tables at health and street fairs) in a non-judgmental, supportive manner.
