Making Local Connections: Volunteer at GMHC!

If you want to work directly with people living with HIV and AIDS, you can donate your time and talents in programs such as the Meals, Nutrition, Wellness & Workforce Program, the Legal Services Department and Women’s Care, Prevention & Support Services.

Getting involved is as easy as

  3. Come to an Open House held every Wednesday beginning promptly at 10:30am or 6:30pm. It runs about an hour and a half. Bring your completed application. Directions to GMHC are below.
   Volunteer Roles

Work directly with GMHC clients

Certified Life Coach Volunteer
Certified Life Coaches are sought to volunteer their services to clients in our MATCH (Moving Ahead Toward Career Horizons) Program. The MATCH Program provides comprehensive job readiness training and supportive services for clients who are transitioning to work. Life Coaches will meet with clients one-on-one to provide their expertise in the context of career exploration, goal-setting, eliminating barriers to employment, and other topics related to workforce development. Life Coaches will also conduct an occasional support group with clients to identify and explore barriers to employment and the struggles involved in returning to the workforce. At this time, we have a critical need for weekday daytime availability, preferably on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. Professionalism paramount, excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Experience in working with underserved populations, substance abuse issues and bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.

Group Leader
Group leaders are mental health professionals who co-lead support groups for men and women (gay and straight) who are from diverse racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Group participants include those in recovery or still using substances, people with HIV/AIDs and their significant others and family members (both HIV-positive and HIV-negative). Opportunities include groups for care partners of people with AIDS, bereavement groups, and recovery groups. An advanced degree in the area of mental health is required.

Kitchen Assistant
Kitchen Assistant volunteers assist Meal Program staff in preparing soups, salads, desserts and a choice of entrees daily for GMHC clients. Also assist with serving and clean-up. Weekday daytime availability required.

Licensed Professionals/ Workshop Leaders
Licensed professionals who are chiropractors, massage therapists, reflexologists, and haircutters are needed to volunteer their talents and services to clients in our Wellness Program. In addition, volunteers with a special talent such as art, music, dance, writing, exercise, etc., and who possess the ability to instruct clients in workshops, are also needed. At this time, we have a critical need for a painting instructor (acrylic, oil or water), exercise instructors, chiropractors, GED Instructors, Yoga instructors, full-body acupuncturists, haircutters and massage therapists (particularly Shiatsu and Swedish).

Nutrition and Pantry Assistant
Volunteer will provide assistance to Nutrition staff with food pantry operations, Nutrition class recruitment and curriculum development, provide outreach for wellness program activities and act as a liasion between clients and nutrition staff. Volunteers will provide needed support in food pantry operations including maintaining shelf stock, signing active clients in, filling client orders, and accepting vendor deliveries.  This role requires strong communication skills both in person and public speaking, computer proficiency required in Word and Excel applications, Publisher preferred.  Professional training background a plus, volunteer must be detail-oriented and possess the ability to work under pressure and adapt to a diverse population. Weekday daytime availability only, bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Theatre Desk Program Assistant
Theatre Desk volunteers assist in operating the Jerry Herman Theatre Desk at GMHC by distributing donated theatre tickets to clients as well as written/phone communication with the theatres, posting/updating events on the board, procuring new venues of tickets, and occasionally distributing tickets at the theatre the night of the performance. This role requires strong communication skills, both phone and in person, some computer proficiency preferred. Daytime weekday availability required.

Work with the public

Community Educator
Represent GMHC as an HIV/AIDS educator to a broad range of audiences within the five boroughs of NYC as a speaker and/or tabling/outreach worker. In this multi-faceted volunteer role, facilitate workshops and/or provide information about HIV and GMHC services (e.g. in classes and clinics, at tables at health and street fairs) in a non-judgmental, supportive manner. Employ a variety of dynamic educational techniques. Stay informed of HIV-related information and GMHC policies. Follow procedures as outlined in the Community Education Volunteer Procedure Guide. One year commitment required, must have daytime, weekday availability.

HIV Testing Center Counselor
The volunteer provides pre & post HIV, Hepatitis C and Syphilis counseling in a confidential setting. Assist clients in assessing readiness for testing as well as their ability to receive results, inform clients of confidential nature of testing and obtain informed consent; conduct overview of client's risk of HIV transmission modes and risk reduction techniques, provide individual results and appropriate counseling and referrals, prepare notes for client records documenting all pre & post sessions and referrals. Weekday, day/evening and Saturday shifts available. Spanish as a Second Language a plus.

Hotline Counselor
Hotline Counselors provide callers with information, referrals and emotional support regarding HIV and AIDS-related issues. Counselors need to be able to respond to a diverse group of callers with diverse needs, and to stay informed about latest HIV/AIDS developments as well as GMHC policies and protocols. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. There is a critical need for daytime, weekday availability.

Hotline E-Mail Counselor
Hotline E-Mail Counselors represent GMHC by providing information, counseling and referrals regarding HIV/AIDS and related issues. Volunteers will provide written responses to people who e-mail the hotline. Excellent writing skills a must. Ability to work independently and to "hear" the emotional content of written requests for information. Must have e-mail systems knowledge and strict attention to GMHC confidentiality protocols. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS issues helpful, but not required. Ongoing training and supervision, at the discretion of Internet Supervisor. Work either at home or on-site at GMHC's Hotline.

IGMH Field Outreach Worker
Institute for Gay Men's Health (IGMH) field outreach workers are responsible for representing IGMH in the community, providing information on HIV/STI's, substance use services available to gay men and the dissemination of prevention campaigns. The Field Outreach Worker will assist with outreach activities at local venues. Questionnaires/surveys may be conducted at identified venues for community feedback. Outreach venues will include but not limited to porn shops, medical offices, cafes, bars, clubs, restaurants, bath houses, and schools. Volunteer should also have a good sense of where gay/bisexual and non-gay identified men having sex with men live, congregate and socialize. Excellent communication and organizational skills required, professionalism and confidentiality paramount. Minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old.

Volunteer Income Tax Preparer
Volunteer will assist in completion and electronic filing of income tax forms for the GMHC community (clients, volunteers, staff and affiliated others). Volunteer must successfully complete an online training, become knowledgeable on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits, schedule client appointments and keep meticulous files of client documents. Although prior knowledge of tax law or accounting skills is not necessary, this role requires comfort working with numbers and tax software; requires ability to work independently, interact with clients professionally, comfort reviewing employment documents (W-2's, etc.); self-sufficiency, good oral and written communication skills paramount. Volunteer role is January through May, daytime and evening availability twice per week, 10 hours a week. Online and one-on-one training provided.

Work with staff

Development In-Office Special Events Volunteer
Volunteer wanted with excellent interpersonal skills to to effectively interact with staff, other volunteers, and clients, with sensitivity to donor relations, client confidentiality, and other issues in a human services setting.  This volunteer role will provide administrative support to the Special Events staff, including filing and copying documents, working on the GMHC donor database and various tasks around the office. Special Event volunteers may also provide logistical support before, during and after Special Events. Assist the Manager of Special Events with the preparation of reports, memoranda, correspondence and other written materials, including proofreading and editing functions. Assist in coordination of Special Events mailings and responses thereto, including invitations, solicitations for in-kind donations, thank you letters to event donors, etc. Maintain in Raisers Edge database up-to-date activities regarding Special Events. Assist in the formulation, implementation and maintenance of filing systems for all special events. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to follow through on complex projects.  Familiarity with MS Office Suite and/or Raiser's Edge a big plus.  Daytime, weekday availability required.

Development Research Assistant
(Corporate & Foundation Relations)

Volunteer with strong interpersonal and communication, computer (MS Office Suite), and good analytical skills wanted to assist the Corporate & Foundation Relations Development team with research-related activities, updating donor files (both physical and electronic), assist with processing of matching and in-kind gifts and event sponsorships. Exposure to Raiser’s Edge (or willingness to learn) required. Excellent writing skills a plus. Daytime, weekday availability required, 4 hours per week.

Development Research Assistant
(Major Gifts)

Development Research Assistant volunteer sought in Major Gifts to assist the Major Gifts Development team with research-related activities, and provide administrative support. Perform research to identify Major Gifts funding prospects as they pertain to institutional funding needs through both electronic and conventional research modes. Assist in updating physical donor files and electronic donor records in Raiser's Edge, and with the solicitation and processing of event sponsorships & in-kind gifts. Update and create donor profiles to capture biographical, business, and contact information. Good interpersonal & communications skills required, solid administrative skills (MS Office Suite); exposure to Raiser's Edge (or willingness to learn); and good analytical skills necessary. Excellent writing skills a plus. Must have outstanding organization and web-research skills. Attention to detail a must. An institutional knowledge and memory of GMHC activities, event and programs a plus, but not required. Ability to work independently. Hours negotiable (during weekdays) based on needs of organization and individual, minimum of 4 hours per week, daytime weekday availability only.

Financial Management Program Volunteer
Volunteer will provide administrative assistance to Financial Support Unit. Volunteer will assist in sorting and filing of mail (bills, leases, etc.), returning telephone calls and gathering information to report to staff, maintaining log of activities as well as data entry of phone calls and/or activities. Some phone communication with clients required.  Excellent oral and written communication skills required as well as organizational skills, attention to detail a must.  English/Spanish bilingual preferable but not necessary. MS Office computer skills important. Daytime weekday availability, once a week for 4 hours.

IGMH Training Assistant
Institute for Gay Men's Health Training Assistants (IGMH) will assist with trainings and or presentations. This volunteer role will provide an opportunity to begin as an assistant with trainings and presentations and develop skills to become a primary facilitator. Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills required, prior training, facilitation or presentation experience strongly recommended. Weekday day/evening and Saturday opportunities available, generally 4 hours per week.

IGMH Research Assistant with excellent organizational, communication (verbal, written and computer) skills required, outreach and data management experience preferred. This volunteer will assist with community-based research projects via outreach, data collection and management, as well as literature review. This volunteer role will work with staff internally, as well as externally with other community-based organizations and gay venues. Fridays from 2–5 pm. Bilingual English/Spanish as well as SPSS proficiency a plus.

MATCH Program Assistant with good organizational and office skills, excellent oral communication skills and computer proficiency required (MS Word and Excel). This role will serve as a volunteer administrative assistant to the Assistant Director of Workforce Development by providing administrative support in the client registration process, informational seminars, internal/external presentations, calls to potential clients, implementing the first stage of the intake process, and developing a database of community resources. Wednesdays from 12–4pm. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Paralegal – Immigration Project
Volunteer will provide administrative and paralegal assistance to attorneys on the Immigration Team by assisting during intakes of Spanish-speaking clients, provinding administrative support to Immigration Team attorneys with preparation and filing of applications, and legal research associated with Immigration law. Excellent oral and written communication skills required, English/Spanish bilingual necessary. Paralegal and/or legal background desired but not absolutely necessary, will train. MS Office computer skills paramount. Daytime weekday availability required, once a week for 3-4 hours, Fridays, Tuesdays or Thursdays, one year commitment.

Publicity & Outreach Assistant —
GMHC Action Center

Volunteer will conduct outreach and publicity for the GMHC Action Center; design flyers for GMHC Action Center events.  Coordinate monthly mailings and e-mails for Action Center participants.  Basic computer (MS Office, graphic design and writing skills required.  Ability to manage multiple complex tasks necessary.  MS Publisher experience a plus. Daytime weekday availability only (Tuesday or Thursday ideal), once a week for 4 hours.

Relief Reception
General administrative support, including answering phones, photocopying, data entry, stuffing envelopes, filing, scheduling, errands, reception work, and putting together information packets is required by almost every department. Reception experience as well as bilingual English/Spanish a plus. There is a critical need in the Legal Department reception, with experience strongly recommended. In addition, there are several days open (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) for the Meals Program Reception Desk.

Program Assistant
Program support volunteers serve as assistants to paid program staff in more specialized areas, such as records management, editing, research, and technical writing.

At this time, our critical needs include the following:

Development Program Assistant with strong communication (both oral and written), computer (particularly with Raiser's Edge), and organizational skills required.

Hotline Program Assistant with strong detail-oriented skills and computer proficiency required.  This volunteer role will include basic clerical needs as well.

IT Program Assistant with strong detail-oriented skills and computer proficiency required.  This volunteer role will include basic clerical needs as well.

Testing Center Data Entry Assistant with strong database, precise typing, and computer skills are required.

Treatment Library Program Assistant with strong people-oriented skills required (this volunteer will work with clients and staff). Computer proficiency including the Internet is a plus.
