Women's Institute

The Women's Institute is a place that honors the whole woman: a place where women come together to grow, to rediscover their strengths, to heal and to rebuild their lives in a community of women who walk the same path to health and well-being.

The Women's Institute welcomes all women. We support women in all stages of substance use as they seek to stabilize their lives. We support HIV-positive women who have been newly released from prison and are adjusting to society and reintegrating their families.

The Women's Institute is a place for families: a place where each family's unique strengths are affirmed and where families find support and new ways to cope with living with HIV.

Child Life Program

This program services children and parents living with HIV and AIDS. The program is located on the 2nd floor. If you are an HIV-positive parent or caregiver of minor children or you care for an HIV-positive child under 17 years of age, you and your child are eligible for family support services which include: nutritional counseling and food pantry, parenting support, individual and group counseling, special events and family recreation.

Child Sitting Support — Don't have someone to look after your child so that you can get to GMHC for services? The Child Life Playroom provides a safe place for your children to stay while you receive services at GMHC. Playroom hours are: Monday – Thursdays from 11– 3:30 p.m. If you need support outside of these hours, please call us with as much advance notice as possible at 212.367.1260.

The Lesbian AIDS Project (LAP)

LAP provides HIV prevention education and support for women who have sex with and/or partner with other women. If you need to learn more about HIV prevention for women who have sex with women, you can attend a workshop or participate in individual and group counseling. You can email us at LAP@gmhc.org for safer sex information and support. LAP provides support groups and referrals for HIV-positive lesbians and women who partner with other women. This program is located on the 4th floor.

Women in Action (WIA)

Women in Action serves HIV-positive women who are struggling with alcohol and substance use by providing individual and group counseling, complementary therapies (Reiki and ear-point acupuncture), referrals to treatment and access to other life supporting services. If you want to reduce your substance and/or alcohol use or you would like to work on sobriety and recovery and stabilize your life, contact the program. WIA counselors are experienced substance use professionals, and you may contact the program by phone or walk-in any week day to speak with a counselor.

Supportive Services for Heterosexual Women

If you are an HIV-positive woman but you are not a lesbian, do not have a history of substance use, or do not have any children, there is still a place for you! WFS provides group and individual counseling and referrals and support for women.

How to become a WFS client

It is not necessary to become a client to participate in WFS educational events: safer sex workshops, forums and conferences. However, if you would like to receive specific services for you and your family, it is necessary to become a client and there are two ways to go about it:

  1. Contact Access & Assessment for the client intake times.
  2. Contact the WFS program in which you would like to participate and make arrangements with program staff for an intake by calling the WFS Information Line — 212.367.1363.
