Operational Structure of the Institute
IGMH is organized into three components that collaborate in the research, design, and dissemination of Institute programs and interventions. Community Based Research (CBR), Community Education Team (CET), and Environmental Level Interventions (ELI) work together to realize the mission of IGMH.
Community Based Research (CBR): The CBR team has three main goals: 1) to understand the efficacy, strengths and weaknesses of the Institute’s interventions and programs through evaluation efforts; 2) to develop a sound understanding and knowledge base of the Institute’s target populations in relation to health, wellness, risk practice and education needs through field studies; and 3) to create a dynamic learning environment , using a variety of approaches, in which to further build the skills and capacity of staff, volunteers and community. It is our belief that the above-mentioned efforts will foster reflection, thinking and discourse regarding HIV prevention and gay men’s health promotion.
Community Education Team (CET): Informed through the formative research of CBR and the partnerships developed with ELI, CET creates culturally-appropriate materials to shift social norms within communities and effectively deliver health messages. CET focuses on the development of social marketing for the Institute, producing a range of educational and promotional materials and campaigns in a variety of formats, including print, video, and online media.
Environmental Level Interventions (ELI): The ELI team strives to alter the social norms and spaces where gay and bisexual men live and socialize through a variety of structural interventions, including the dissemination of social marketing material. ELI develops partnerships with venues throughout NYC and on the Internet where gay men congregate in the community to develop supportive environments that encourage dialogue and critical thinking. This team actively seeks to engage community members and build a body of volunteers that assist in the work of IGMH in an integrated way.
