The Institute for Gay Men's Health

The Institute for Gay Men's Health is committed to the promotion of wellness among gay men and their affiliated communities. We value and support gay men's physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Addressing multiple health and social issues related to HIV risk, the Institute embraces a broad sexual health agenda for gay men, serving both HIV-negative and positive men.

We carry out this work in four main areas:

Outreach and Community Mobilization Through Volunteer Driven Initiatives

  • Gay Gotham: a multi-cultural outreach program of gay men coming together to act on and raise a greater consciousness of HIV prevention and gay men's health.
  • House of Latex: a youth and young adult outreach program that offers sexual health counseling, referrals, groups and volunteer opportunities to GLBTQ youth affiliated with the house and ball community.
  • Proyecto P.A.P.I.: by and for Latino gay and bisexual men "creating spaces" for a healthier future.
  • Soul Food: by and for black gay and bisexual men who practice same sex desire.

Counseling, Education and Group Activities

  • Gay Men's Counseling and Education (GMCE): sexual health counseling, topical workshops, and discussion groups.
  • Trans Action: this group activity has been developed by and for transgender females of color under 29 years of age. The group meets on a regular basis and addresses issues relevant to the transgender community.

Community Education

  • Social marketing: a range of educational materials such as posters, palm cards and information booklets targeting gay and bisexual men.
  • Media: a number of editorials, articles and campaigns in community targeted publications.

Community-Based Research

  • Field studies: by engaging with community members, this project will harness an understanding of our communities via research initiatives.
  • Program evaluation: this aspect of our work will examine the effectiveness of our existing activities to ensure they reflect the changing needs of our clients.
