New York, New York: Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the creation of a committee made up of members of the New York LGBT community to generate recommendations on site location, design and installation of a monument that will be dedicated to all the LGBT lives lost to violence, including the lives lost in Orlando. The diverse committee will be overseen by Governor Cuomo's General Counsel Alphonso David, and will deliver recommendations by the end of 2016.

In the wake of Orlando, the world saw the harsh reality that many LGBT people still deal with today, and I am honored to be a part of this historic project that will finally recognize all those we have lost to violence. The LGBT community has endured trauma after trauma because of violence, but with the creation of a monument we will have a lasting tribute to those that left us too soon.

New York City Pride is about celebrating our community and our successes in the fight for full equality. Five years ago we marched in a euphoric state because Governor Cuomo signed marriage into law in New York State, which doubled the number of Americans able to marry the person they love. It is easy in that euphoria to forget that daily members of our community, predominately our trans brothers and sisters of color, are living in a perpetual fear of losing their lives.

This monument will stand as a reminder to both our allies and the LGBT community that our struggle against violence is far from over, but we will be carried to success by the spirits of those we lost to senseless violence. We will work together to make sure our community is safe not just on Pride, but everyday.

About Gay Men's Health Crisis
Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) is the nation's leading provider of HIV and AIDS care, prevention services and advocacy, serving nearly 9,000 people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS in New York City, the epidemic's largest U.S. epicenter. As the world's first HIV and AIDS service organization, GMHC is an expert in providing services that every person affected by the epidemic deserves. GMHC is on the front lines caring for people who are both HIV negative and positive, including: testing, nutrition, legal, mental health and education services. GMHC also advocates for stronger public policies at the local, state and federal level with the goal of ending AIDS as an epidemic in New York State by 2020. Most recently, GMHC and other HIV and AIDS organizations successfully persuaded the federal government to recommend widespread use of PrEP, a new daily treatment that is over 90% effective in preventing HIV infection.
