ACTION ALERT!

STAND UP FOR A HUMANE AND JUST IMMIGRATION POLICY

Right now, the U.S. Senate is debating the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. This legislation poses a serious threat to immigrants in our community.  If enacted, it would:

  • Mandate severe criminal penalties for immigration violations
  • More than double the time immigrants in most states have to wait before they are eligible for Medicaid
  • Cap the number of visas issued to parents of U.S. citizens
  • Eliminate green cards for siblings and adult children of U.S. citizens and green card holders
  • Terminate the diversity lottery program
  • Create a guest worker program with no meaningful worker protections, no path to legal residency, and no access to medical care.

This legislation lets stand:

  • The 20 year old policy that has banned HIV+ noncitizens from entering the U.S. and barred those already living here from attaining most types of legal status.
  • The requirement that individuals petition for asylum within one year of arrival in the U.S. — an unrealistic deadline for people who may not learn until much later that asylum (including asylum premised on their sexual orientation or HIV status) is a possibility and/or have to navigate the system without fluency in English.
  • Indefinite detention, where many asylees, immigrants, and prospective immigrants remain, usually without access to their medication, pending a decision on their claim.

PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY AND TELL THEM TO VOTE NO ON SENATE BILL 1348. Call Senator Clinton at (202) 224-4451 and Senator Schumer at (202) 224-6542 and say:

"My name is ________________ and I live in New York. I'm calling to urge the Senator to oppose the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. This is an inhumane bill that undermines due process, threatens the health of immigrants, and makes it almost impossible for undocumented immigrants to achieve legal permanent residency. Like most New Yorkers, I want my Senator to fight for just and compassionate immigration reform Senate Bill 1348 is neither."
