Where can I find free HIV and STD testing in New York City?
Question
Hello,
I need a listing for any free testing clinics for HIV and other
STDs in my area. I live in downtown New York and I'm not working
at the moment. I need some free testing services. There's a chance
I may be HIV positive.
Thanks for any help in advance.
Answer
Hello,
The Department of Health does free testing for HIV and other STDs
like syphilis and gonorrhea. They have sites throughout the city.
Call their AIDS Hotline at 800-825-5448 to find locations near
you and available hours.
There are other options that aren't free but work on a sliding
scale according to what you can afford. Here at GMHC our Geffen
Testing Center offers HIV, Hepatitis C, and syphilis testing. We
have appointments during the week and drop in hours on Fridays
and Saturdays. You can get more information or make an appointment
by contacting the Testing Center at 212-367-1100. Planned Parenthood
also offers HIV and STD screenings at a low cost. You can call
800-230-7526 to find the clinic nearest you.
You mentioned there is a chance you may be HIV positive, and I'm wondering what support you have as you go through what may be a difficult time. Feel free to call our Hotline if you want to talk about what's up or need more information at 212-807-6655 or 800-AIDS-NYC. Our counselors are available from 10 am 9 pm Monday Friday and from 12 noon 3 pm on Saturdays.
Take care,
