| Milk Thistle (Silybum
marianum)
GMHC'S Nutrition & Wellness Program
Milk thistle is found in dry, rocky soils in southern and Western
Europe and in some parts of the United States. Its growth is spreading
as a weed. The organs/systems affected by its use are the liver
and gallbladder. Milk thistle is rich in silymarin, a flavonoid
that has antioxidant properties. It is also considered anti-inflammatory.
PARTS USED: the seeds, sold whole or in powdered
form.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR: helps to promote liver cell
regeneration and repair. Is used in conditions such as chronic cirrhosis,
hepatitis A & B, alcoholism; to relieve symptoms of psoriasis, gallbladder
problems, to protect the kidneys, and to increase the secretion
of bile from the liver and gallbladder, to help detoxify the liver
from fatty foods and environmental chemicals. Some reports attribute
an antidepressant property to this herb.
HOW TO TAKE THIS HERB: as a decoction: 1 teaspoon
of seeds, crushed or powdered per cup of water. Simmer covered for
25 to 30 minutes. If using the powdered form, it may be simmered
15 to 20 minutes only. As tincture and capsules: follow manufacturer's
instruction. Because the whole seeds are not soluble in water, extracts/tinctures
are many times preferred. Always select a brand that says "standardized"
formula on the label. Milk thistle may be combined with vertain,
dandelion root, or globe artichoke as liver tonics.
CAUTION: The above is an information sheet. Always
consult your health provider before starting any herbal treatment.
There are no known contraindications for the use of milk thistle
but individual allergies and tolerances must be taken into account.
